Portugal se ha impuesto a Turquía (2-0) en el partido correspondiente a la primera jornada del Grupo A de la Eurocopa, gracias a los goles de Pepe y Meireles. Con un gran juego colectivo, la selección lusa dirigida por Luiz Felipe Scolari, ha dominado de principio a fin a los turcos, ordenados pero con poca mordiente, y ha ofrecido un juego excelente lleno de detalles técnicos pero no exento de disposición táctica. Con esta victoria Portugal lidera el Grupo A con la República Checa que se ha impuesto a la anfitriona Suiza en el partido inaugural.

Cristiano Ronaldo - who hit the post with a sensational free-kick early on - inspired his side to victory as they scored two second half goals to kill of a Turkish threat which never materialised.
After having a first-half effort disallowed, Pepe made no mistake on the hour as he gave Portugal the lead with a stunning individual effort.
Nuno Gomes hit post and crossbar before the second goal arrived in stoppage time when substitute Raul Meireles finished off a fine counter-attack.
Portugal now sit on top of Group A after Czech Republic's 1-0 win over Switzerland earlier on Saturday.

Portugal floated satisfyingly above the week's dramas to open their Euro
campaign with an impressive victory.
Luiz Felipe Scolari sent his team out to attack, Cristiano Ronaldo threatened from every position in it, and a Real Madrid centre back scored the glorious opener to which his wannabe club-mate inevitably contributed. At the death, Ronaldo created one more thing of beauty and there might have been many more. This latest Seleccao created chance upon chance and struck every timber of the Turks' goal.
"This was the display I expected from the team, with good technical quality and great, impressive form," said Scolari. "We've been working on this. I've been in a few tournaments and I know how important it is to win your first match. We will keep this rhythm, we will be confident, but we will not let the confidence get to our players' heads. Because other teams can defeat us. Let's see if we can keep this rhythm and keep playing this beautiful football."
Ronaldo grew into his game. Possibly pressured by the furore over his stated desire to leave Manchester United, even Scolari admitted the winger had started slowly. Yet Ronaldo finished in style. "I'm pleased," he said. "I did not score, but I think I played well. Turkey played very defensively. They were closed - even when they were a goal down. It was a hard game and it was very important to start with a win. Everyone knew that."
Relaxed and open, Scolari had wise-cracked and eulogised on everything from tactics to religion on the eve of the match. Only one question raised hackles - an English newspaper journalist reprimanded for "a lack of respect" in his suggestion that 'Big Phil' had advised 'Grand Ronaldo' to declare for Real. Madrid's batting eyelashes were not Ronaldo's sole distraction. High in the Stade de Geneve sat his Spanish girlfriend Nereida Gallardo, her public image measurable in a recent Portuguese headline: "Exclusive: Nereida wearing clothes".
Scolari's selection was as promised - his standard 4-2-3-1 formation headed not by Ronaldo but by a conventional striker in Nuno Gomes, one of Portugal's five captains. Pressure to swap goalkeeper Ricardo with Quim was conveniently ended when the back-up succumbed to a fractured wrist.

GINEVRA - Se il bungiorno si vede dal mattino, Felipe Scolari ha di che essere soddisfatto. Il suo Portogallo, nel debutto contro un avversario ostico come la Turchia, vince (2-0) e soprattutto convince. E il bottino dei lusitani sarebbe potuto essere ancora più ampio: alla fine sono tre i legni colpiti da Cristiano Ronaldo e compagni. Ai quali si aggiunge una rete, probabilmente regolare, annullata dall'arbitro Fandel. Gli uomini di Scolari dominano la gara per larghi tratti, anche se lamentano la cronica incapacità di concretizzare al massimo le occasioni create.
Così quando tutti aspettano la giocate del fuoriclasse del Manchester, a sbloccare la partita è Pepe. Il difensore del Real Madrid, al 61' semina avversari con una progressione degna del compagno più blasonato e dopo un uno-due con Nuno Gomes batte Volkan, complice anche una devizione di Servet. Il Portogallo, che soffre l'assenza di un uomo d'area di rigore, potrebbe chiudere la gara prima, evitando così la sofferenza per il forcing finale turco.

GINEVRA (Svizzera), 7 giugno 2008 - Il Portogallo regala spettacolo all'esordio nell'Europeo. Ma per piegare la Turchia di Terim deve affidarsi ad un golletto di un difensore, Pepe, che segna l'1-0 che in pratica decide la gara. Poi a tempo scaduto, al 92', arriva il raddoppio del nuovo entrato Meireles. La squadra di Scolari, vicecampione d'Europa in carica - ma la beffa in finale in casa con la Grecia ancora brucia - dimostra subito di poter ambire al titolo. Ha tanti giocatori di qualità, su tutti Cristiano Ronaldo, già campione d'Europa (come Nani) con il club: il "suo" Manchester United. Ma stasera hanno fatto un figurone pure Deco, Moutinho e Simao. Gioco da leccarsi i baffi, ma porta che sembrava stregata: colpa dei tre legni colpiti da Ronaldo e da Nuno Gomes (due volte). Insomma i portoghesi (che si permettono di far partire in panca Nani e Quaresma) hanno già dimostrato di avere la carte in regola per arrivare in finale - dalla loro parte di tabellone l'unico avversario del loro livello è la Germania - ma sottoporta devono acquisire - ed è una carenza ricorrente negli anni - una maggiore cattiveria agonistica. La Turchia ha tenuto botta, ma onestamente ha rischiato più volte la mareggiata, salvata da un pizzico di buona sorte. I turchi sono compatti e ostici, e in avanti hanno un signor giocatore come Nihat, ma le corazzate in Svizzera-Austria sono ben altre.
PORTOGALLO SPRECONE - Il primo tempo è tutto del Portogallo. Che in mezzo sfrutta la quallità di Moutinho e Deco (ispirato), e sulle fasce spinge forte alla ricerca della superiorià numerica con Cristiano Ronaldo e Simao

El cuento del tío Pepe
El zaguero se animó en una pared y acabó la resistencia turca. Cristiano Ronaldo sólo tuvo momentos.
El brasileño Luiz Felipe Scolari exageró: "Fue una exhibición impresionante de calidad técnica y física". Felipao, te concedemos que Portugal jugó mejor y ganó con justicia, pero tampoco te creas que tus jugadores deslumbraron. Turquía sólo fue un equipo concentrado, batallador y con orden táctico. También, de poca profundidad y desborde. Y fragilidades: Zan casi regala un gol por una ingenuidad.
Fue otro brasileño el que salvó a los portugueses. Pepe, zaguero comprado hace un año por el Real Madrid en 30 millones de euros. Apenas estuvo dos temporadas por el Corinthians antes de pasar al Marítimo portugués (02) y de allí al Porto (2004). Le habían anulado un gol, por offside y a los 15 minutos del segundo tiempo se animó, tiró la pared con Nuno Gomes y definió.
Tuvo la solución que los palos le habían negado a Cristiano Ronaldo y Gomes. "Sabíamos que tarde o temprano la íbamos a meter", explicó Pepe. Y la sensación es real, porque los turcos sin hacer agua quedaban en evidencia en cuanto a la inferioridad individual. Muy aislado Nihat en ataque, el medio fue portugués. Bien Deco en la distribución y el traslado. El cansó a los turcos. Aun debajo de su mejor versión, la del Porto 04 o Barcelona 05/06, otro brasileño de nacimiento resultó importante. Esto, pese a que los catalanes ya no cuentan con él.
¿Y Ronaldo? Tuvo momentos de explosión. Todos los flashes estuvieron detrás de la figura por la que suspira el Real Madrid y por la cual el Manchester amenaza con demandas ante la FIFA. Marcó algunas diferencias con su velocidad, le faltó definición.
Nuno Gomes no venía de una buena temporada: siete goles para el Benfica, lejos de los 24 de Licha López en Porto. Contra Turquía tuvo más impacto que continuidad.
A Portugal hay que respetarlo, no agrandarlo. Habrá que verlo ante un mayor potencial, seguramente en cuartos de final.
Sobre el final los turcos le dieron un susto, cuando una mala salida de Ferreira le dejó el gol a Tuncay, que pifió. Al toque llegó el 2-0 en una contra que concretó el ingresado Meireles, en el descuento.
Ahí Portugal sintió que el cuento había terminado.
